Reading Challenges
Overview
The Library offers multiple Reading Challenges each school year. Typically, these are announced to the students during library time in September, and reminders are given throughout the year.
Feel free to encourage your child to challenge themselves by expanding their reading selections.
Read On, Rockets!
(Chapter) Books without Pictures Reading Challenge
Posted by Kimberly Mitchell on 7/26/2023
The (Chapter) Books without Pictures Reading Challenge (BWP) is for grades 3-5. Graphic novels have many benefits, but traditional novels build different skills. This reading challenge is an attempt at balance.
These titles must be from RSA library only and will be verified for accuracy.
Prizes:
Three titles = 1 pencil
6 titles = 1 Rocket ticket
10 titles = 1 prize book
A Little Color Reading Challenge
Posted by Kimberly Mitchell on 8/18/2022
A Little Color Reading Challenge is geared for Kinder - 2nd grade. It's a fun way to encourage reading by pairing them with activities, plus you get to color and keep 4 bookmarks for yourself!
Note: regarding the activity that deals with reading in the bathtub: please use a dry bathtub (or, at least NOT a library book, haha).
Prizes:
5 activites = 1 pencil
10 activites = 1 Rocket ticket
All 20 activities = 1 prize book
A Little Color, form and bookmarks
Dewey Challenge
Posted by Kimberly Mitchell on 8/18/2022
The Dewey Decimal Challenge is for grades 3-5 and is offered as a way to encourage exploration of non-fiction topics and a way to practice searching in a library.
These titles must be from RSA library only and will be verified for accuracy.
Prizes:
Three titles = 1 pencil
6 titles = 1 Rocket ticket
All 10 titles = 1 prize book
Genre Challenge
Posted by Kimberly Mitchell on 8/18/2022
The Genre Challenge helps students define and distinguish between 10 important book genres.
Every student in grades 3-5 is given a bookmark listing all the genres to keep forever. Then, they are encouraged to do the Genre Challenge. This is a great way to encourage them to explore different genres and really think about the characteristics of a story.
Books listed can be from RSA library, the public library, their classroom, or home. I do verify each title for genre accuracy.
Prizes:
Three titles completed = 1 pencil
Six titles completed = 1 Rocket ticket
All ten titles completed = 1 prize book
Read A Classic, Get a Rocket Ticket
Posted by Kimberly Mitchell on 8/18/2022
The "Read A Classic, Get A Rocket Ticket" Challenge is almost as simple as it sounds.
The Library has a dedicated shelf for classic literature. Check out and read one of these. When you're done, you answer a few questions to prove you read it (instead of watching the movie), and you get a Rocket ticket.
You can do this challenge multiple times each school year. While all ages are invited to do this challenge, most classic books are geared for grade 3-5 reading level.
